Identity Theft Assistance

If you believe or have been notified that your personal information has been compromised, we recommend visiting the Federal Trade Commission's ID theft website at https://identitytheft.gov to file an Identity Theft Report.

Filing an Identity Theft Report with the FTC through the above website will also notify the IRS about the incident, which will help protect your federal tax account. The FTC will also help you create a personalized recovery plan.

For up-to-date news and general information about ID theft, fraud, and scams, you can visit https://consumer.ftc.gov/

Please remember that the IRS will NOT contact you via email, text message, or social media to request personal information. If you receive a suspicious email about tax forms, tax returns, or finance from anyone claiming to be an IRS or one of its agents, you can forward the email to [email protected] for the IRS to investigate.

The IRS also offers an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) program for you, your spouse, and/or your dependents. IP PINs are unique per person and sent by mail every January, or can be accessed via your IRS.gov account (you will need to set up an account).

Please note that the IP PIN changes each year and your return cannot be e-filed without the PIN, so if you choose to sign up for an IP PIN, it's important not to lose the IP PIN letter(s).

For additional information about taxpayer identity theft, please see IRS Publication 5027.
